Five Things About Cataloging
by Melissa Powell

Say "cataloging" and people cringe, cry, run away. They don't realize how amazing it is in the hands of the willing.

Cataloging is Power

You choose how you want to catalog at your library. Every library is different. The more you understand, even basic vocabulary, the easier for you to tell your vendors how you want it done!

Cataloging is Flexible

There are rules to help you remain consistent and describe books on topics you know nothing about. Cataloging is an art as well as a science. The only perfect record is the one that helps the patron find what they need!

Cataloging is Local

Even if you have someone outside the library doing the cataloging you will need to make suggestions about the cataloging to that vendor and catalog local donations. Who knows better than you how it needs to be done so your patrons can find what they are looking for?

Cataloging has Levels

You don't have to be an expert cyclist to enjoy a ride on the bike paths and you don't need to know everything about cataloging to understand it or even catalog!

Cataloging knowledge ROCKS!

Even the basics puts the power in your hands . Decide how you want your library arranged for your patrons and get the most out of that computer software you paid so much for.
