Mentors and Protégés: Creating Successful Workplace Programs

There's a lot of common-sense planning that goes into running an effective, creative, dynamic mentor program. It really isn't about magic — it's about organization, details, and continual evaluation to help us stay on target and focus on our goals.

Today's mentor programs are shaping the future of librarianship. Throughout this course, we will be exploring how to create the best interchanges between mentors and protégés, with an eye toward positive results for all involved.

After completing this course, you will be able to:
  • Design and implement a sustainable workplace mentoring program that meets the needs of your organization, its employees, and the people you serve
  • Explain why a mentoring program is important to your organization and your colleagues so you maintain support for the program
  • Effectively recruit and match mentors and protégés who will benefit from your mentoring program
  • Modify a mentoring program in progress to resolve problems that arise
  • Encourage program participants to contribute tangible products that are accessible to other program participants so that the program has a long-lasting positive impact
  • Effectively evaluate successes and failures within the mentoring program to improve the next program you design and implement.
